When I had filmmaking class, We watched a film called ''Bowling For Columbine''. It was a Michael Moore film, meaning it was very outspoken in the matter of the movie's context. I found it interesting how the film lookeed at the way News is delivered on television and how it only concentrates on the negative things that happen. It shocks me how right Moore was on his perspective. I mean, turn on a random news channel right now and tell me what is being discussed, probably the victim in the latest hit-and-run, or how the cops are searching for this guy that did THIS and his accomplice that did THAT, and then after that they'll talk about celebrity drama (Tiger Woods),and then after that, they'll talk about the next big depressing rain storm headed our way. The way the news is set up, the only good things you hear about nowadays is when someone gets rescued by a firefighter or something like that. The bad thing about it is even if you don't want to watch the news, you HAVE to, to know what's going on this particular day. I mean I know people buy into tragedy and that's the real reason people watch the news, but i just wish things were just a BIT happier on the news we receive. The media twists things out of context and makes it sound worse than it really is. They make a mountain out of a mole.
NOTE: I found pictures of news related political cartoons criticizing news topics, but the site won't let me attach them to the blog. I also can't find clips from the movie from Youtube of the exact scene I wanted to show.

I agree, I was just thinking that today. I was watching the news this morning to see if school was canceled due to snow & I saw news about this disgusting snow storm and a huge accident in New York. Even in the newspaper, The Daily News, the headline was the woman killer whale trainer who was killed. I also agree that I would love to see more appealing/happy stories in the news.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree. I feel the either the News doesn't show you the right stuff or it exaggerates the truth. For example with the current crisis in Pakistan it makes you think that Pakistan is the scariest place to be right now. However, I just recently realized that people are living there aren't as scared as I am from watching the news. I finally came over my fear when I came to know that the news just exaggerated every little thing that happened and made it a big deal where as other news channels hide stuff from you.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this completelty. Obviously, when there are big issues going on, the news needs to show the negative stuff, regardless of how depressing it might be. The problem is the news doesn't show enough of the positive things that are happening in the world. I really wish they would, because then maybe some people would stop feeling so fearful, and like the world is hopeless. They also might be engouraged to do more positive things if they were shown the stuff other people were accomplishing.
